On a third point, they would only move forward 10, thus scoring at 15, 30 and 40. Another point meant moving an another 15 feet down the court. Scoring points on serve was useful as it enabled the serving player to move forward 15 feet, getting closer to their opponent and able to target shots with more accuracy. A hugely popular game at the time was jeu de paume, similar to tennis but using the hand instead of a racket. There is another theory rooted in French heritage. It was basically breaking the clock face down into manageable chunks. Going from 30 to 40 instead of 45 meant that, in a deuce situation, the advantage could be recorded by moving the hand on the clock from 40 to 50, then another nicely symmetrical 10 minutes to midnight for the win. ![]() To accommodate the two clear points a player must take each game by, it looked far neater to move things back by five minutes. To win, a player had to be first to get the hand back to midnight.īut why 45 and not 40? That’s down to deuce. Each player began at 12, then was moved to quarter past (15) with the first point, then half past (30) with the second and quarter to (45) with the third. One theory is that clock faces were used to record the score on court. The 15, 30 and 40 scores most likely date back to the days of the French court in the 15th and 16th centuries. That’s fine, we’re getting the hang of it now, it’s all about multiples of 15, so your next point should take you up to 45… Hang on? Where did 40 come from? In tennis, you score a point, it’s straight to 15. In football, you score a goal, your team’s score goes up by one. In tennis terms, the obstacle is an interruption to the smooth flow of play. Its roots lie on an Old Saxon word lettian, which meant hindering something or someone’s progress, or an obstacle. If that clipping mistake makes the ball land outside the service box, then it’s a fault. In any game, a let is given when, on serve, a ball clips the net and bounces inside the service box and the player responsible is allowed to serve again. Imagine serving for the championship when that opening shot doesn’t quite go to plan? Fortunately, there’s a rule for that. Nerves can get to the most experienced of players. Seeding was invented for tennis but it’s now been embraced by other sports, including football. The sections of the draw are also arranged so that none of the top eight can play each other until the quarter finals and none of the top four seeds until the semi-finals. If each seed lives up to their status and continues to beat unseeded opponents, they shouldn’t play another seed until at least the third round, when only 32 players remain. Thirty-two of the top-ranked players in the world are seeded and the draw is arranged so that none of the top 32 can meet at this stage by placing them into different sections. ![]() The first round of the Wimbledon singles competition features 128 players. It’s based on the way seedlings are arranged in a garden, with the smaller ones found at the front of the plot and the larger at the back so they don’t impede on the smaller ones when they are growing (or trying to progress through a major tennis tournament). In order to keep competitions interesting, the best players are delayed from meeting each other until as late into the tournament as possible. Referencing our conversation and interviews with Derek I read about Spelunky 2's design choices I wrote a series of slightly leading questions to guide a voiceover for Derek to record. With all this in mind I pitched the dev commentary trailer idea, with this Creature in the Well trailer as inspiration. Also, since people go out of their way to watch a live event, they want something worth their time, not just some trailers they can watch on a YouTube channel (though it seems highly anticipated big budget AAA game trailers are the exception) People also bounced off of presentations which felt impersonal and corporate. If you haven't read it, my key takeaway is people don't like things which "feel like advertising." Seems like an odd thing to say since a livestream event is literal advertising, but I take that to mean people don't like when something feels like it's designed to primarily benefit the ADVERTISER not the AUDIENCE. This research is what spawned this newsletter post about making trailers for live events! I wanted to make a trailer best suited to the livestream format and audience. When the State of Play opportunity arrived, I put my initial idea aside and started researching the reaction to previous State of Plays as well as Nintendo Directs and the Xbox 20/20. I wanted to bottle up this feeling into the trailer, but a montage of player deaths and failures felt like it would have the opposite effect. I really wanted people to laugh when they saw a Spelunky death in the trailer, not get turned off. In our conversation and press interviews, Derek mentioned his goal of making the game more approachable and fun for people who bounced off of the original (all while balancing it with the signature amount of challenge)Īs a huge fan of the original game, I knew the vast majority of the time, my reaction to dying in the game was laughter at myself, and almost never frustration or anger. ![]() I knew hardcore fans would be interested no matter what gameplay we showed my main concern were potential new fans who'd heard the original game's reputation for being very difficult game. "We needed to expand this to other hospitals because it's such a significant improvement to medical errors," said Floyd. One of its newest clients is 496-bed Boston Medical Center, the biggest safety-net hospital in New England. ![]() In 2016, the I-PASS Patient Safety Institute was launched as a company to help scale up those strategies, and bring the program's mentors, immersive online simulation training, benchmarking tools and EHR customizations to more locations. And, importantly, handoffs weren't any more time-consuming than before." The program is now at use in about 50 hospitals nationwide. As noted in the New England Journal of Medicine, "medical errors decreased by 23 percent, preventable adverse events decreased by 30 percent, and critical information was included more frequently in written and verbal handoffs. The program was tested at nine pediatrics programs, and proved its mettle with some impressive safety gains. I-PASS – Illness severity, Patient summary, Action list, Situation awareness and contingency plans and Synthesis by receiver – is meant to be a checklist that summarizes a patient's care plan and uses "closed loop communication" to ensure clinicians get the right information. Several years ago, a group of physicians and researchers devised a tool to bring some standardization to the hand-off process. It's been estimated that 80 percent of the most dangerous medical errors occur because of communication failures during handoffs, when docs and nurses change shifts, or patients are moved to new locations in the hospital. "Why are we putting people at risk when really we just need to improve these handoffs?" said William Floyd, president and CEO of the I-PASS Patient Safety Institute. ![]() But a bleary-eyed doctor in the waning hours of a 30-hour shift presents its own patient safety challenges. One sure way to reduce risky patient handoffs in a hospital, where the potential exists for miscommunication and medical errors, is to increase the length of shifts that physicians and nurses work. As much as you think you know about this band means nothing. Next up was Primitive Man and this set was a lesson in perseverance and just how much barbarism the ear can take. Time wise the performance flew by but was so good I didn’t want it to end. This trio very effectively conveyed their message of being sick and damn tired of the current state of this world and delivered this message with a level of passion and fire that was something to behold. And then Spencer Lee with the black metal vocals and taut bass lines is a behemoth in every sense of the word. I realize Stevenson was with them for awhile but there literally is no comparison to Herbst who brings a higher level of aggression and feeling to the drum kit and subsequently the band’s overall sound. As for comparisons to The Golden Veil material that featured Matt Stevenson (“The Architect”), this version is superior. Herbst was an absolute beast in the percussion department. And Luke Herbst on drums has put an extra fire in this band and furthermore in this performance. Jesus this guy got into it, particularly the “YOU WERE WRONG” shouts towards the end of “The Somnambulist”. If we’re talking energy, Scott Endres was the dynamite stick of the night. Touring on the heels of their recently released and highly charged third full length Pilgrimage Of Loathing, this trio unequivocally delivered an outstanding performance. ![]() Talk about passion and energy, these guys are the epitome of both. In the mean time, listen to records from both acts below and just imagine the damage we’re in for.Let me start by saying I’ve never seen Dragged Into Sunlight, Primitive Man or MAKE live. Keep your eyes and ears open for more news from this collab in the coming weeks. That sort of musical direction coming from the bleak pairing of Dragged into Sunlight and Gnaw their Tongues is bound to be devastating, if not (appropriately) miserable. ![]() This sounds like it could be very similar to the Full of Hell / Merzbow split record, which was one of my personal favorites of 2014. The band describes the collaboration as follows: Expect a vortex of audio madness inspired by the likes of Godflesh, Merzbow, Napalm Death, Terrorizer, Mugwart and Esoteric, and of course our good friends Gnaw Their Tongues. At long last, it looks like we’ll be getting new recordings from Dragged into Sunlight in 2015, and it’ll be a collaborative record with Dutch drone/black metal act Gnaw Their Tongues. Since then, the band have been an active live act, but have been relatively quiet on the new-material front. Later that year after their MDF performance, the band released their sophomore record Widowmaker, which widened the band’s scope into dark cinematic territories. ![]() They remain as one of the most intense live acts I’ve ever seen, and their music naturally reflects this nature. We’ve been following the black metal act for years, and I’ve had the privilege of seeing the act perform at Maryland Deathfest 2012, where they performed most of their set facing away from the audience to candlelight and strobes before turning around for a vicious finale. For those unfamiliar, UK’s Dragged into Sunlight embody the deepest misanthropic spite and chaos anyone could hope for out of the metal underground. ![]() ![]() NW 20 .Ĭheese pizza at Vace Italian Delicatessen The sodium levels on this pie are assertive but not bloodthirsty.
